A Santa Clarita bankruptcy attorney explains how to negotiate with creditors during the coronavirus pandemic.
As part of a larger plan to deal with financial difficulties in times of crisis, bankruptcy attorney Louis Esbin, of Louis J. Esbin law firms, recommends that clients contact their creditors directly and explain their situation.
Esbin's recommendations on how to do this during the COVID-19 pandemic follow the same guidelines as his suggestions for Santa Clarita residents preparing for an earthquake. In other words, these recommendations are useful to keep in mind even after the pandemic has ended.
Esbin recommends customers first create an account for every line of credit they currently have. Having this information in one place makes it easier to contact each lender one at a time.
The list should include each creditor's name, account number and their contact information, Esbin said.

Once the list was made, Esbin advised Santa Clarita residents to call each believer and explain how the coronavirus pandemic has affected them personally.
"Are you on leave? Have you been fired Or are you a small business owner who is engaged in a non-essential business and has therefore (not yet) opened your business? “Asked Esbin.
If the answer to any of these questions is "yes", then this should be discussed with creditors.
"Please send an email. Ask for a fax number. When you're done with the interview, send an email or fax to confirm the interview, ”advised the Santa Clarita bankruptcy attorney.
This way, debtors can ensure that they record their conversations with each creditor.
Esbin recommended that Santa Clarita residents list the details of the conversation, including any changes the creditor announced for debt repayment.
It is also important to include the date, time, and the name of the employee who answered the call. This can be used in court if a dispute arises later, Esbin said.
Finally, Esbin asked Santa Clarita residents who had concerns about their personal or business finances to contact his office for individual help.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Louis J. Esbin's law firms are said to be using Zoom teleconferencing software to communicate with clients over the internet.
"If you think your financial situation is in danger – if you think you will lose sleep, please contact our office," said Esbin. "We're here to help you. We have always been here to help this community."
